October 29, 2005 was chaired by Jese Abilla and Josette Riley. It was very successful and thoroughly enjoyed by the attendees. A DVD COPY of this memorable event will be sent to you when you donate to the PNAO SCHOLARSHIP FUND. Contact Cita Marasigan @ (440) 232-9606 to order your copy. On November 18-19, 2005, Leonor Demario, Cecil Estrella and I represented PNAO at the 2nd Asian American Health Conference in Ohio. It was held at the Marriot Cleveland East and at the Corporate College East. The theme of the event was “Eliminating Disparities in the Health of Ohio’s Asian American and Pacific Islander Communities”. An array of distinguished speakers covered various health related topics and nurse attendees were awarded CEU’s for their attendance. Our very own “re- activated” member Professor Cora Munoz of Capital University, Columbus Ohio did the workshop on “Cultural Competency for the Health Care Professional”. We also had the privilege of networking with the following Filipino Nurse Scholars at Capital University: Sheila Batavia, Marissa Trion, Theses Villanueva, Lawrence Castro, and Thelma Orande. The Annual PNAO Family Christmas Party was celebrated by family and friends of PNAO at St. Jude Church Hall in Warrensville Heights, on December 17, 2005. The Christmas Spirit permeated the occasion with the Christmas Story participated in by the children, story-tellers and song leaders. Santa Claus distributed gifts to the “good, nice, and even the naughty” ones. The food went as fast as they came! The Group presentations were unmatched, unduplicated and very creative. Line-dancing lead by Roger Tavares was unending! And everyone had a GREAT Time!!! PNAO members were participants to two Medical-Surgical Missions in the Philippines. Cecil Estrella will report on the Iba, Zambales Mission sponsored by the Philippine Medical Association of Michigan, and Thelma Ortega will write an article on the mission in Bohol sponsored by the Association of Philippine Physicians of Ohio. The 5th International Nursing Conference sponsored by the Philippine Nurses Association and PNAA was held January 25-27, 2006 in Honolulu, Hawaii. It was well attended by over a hundred delegates from the Philippines, Australia, Hawaii, and mainland USA. PNAO delegates were Cecil Estrella and Cita Marasigan. We were doubly treated with the historical Centennial Celebration of the coming of the first Filipinos in Hawaii. On March 4, 2006, the 3rd Annual Lake County International Folk Festival was held at Lakeland Community College in Kirtland, Ohio. PNAO participants were Richard Olique, Marites Javines, Bessie Schiroky and Cita Marasigan rendering the popular Filipino dance Tinikling. PNAO MEETING MINUTES and CALENDAR OF EVENTS are e-mailed to the PNAO E- MAIL LIST and will soon be available at our still “under construction” website (pnaohio. org). Copies will also be mailed upon request. Contact us by e-mail: pnaohio@ yahoo. com. Or call (440) 232-9606. 2006 is Election year for PNAO officers and Board Members. The 2006-2008 terms will start on the 8th Induction and Anniversary Ball to be held on September 30, 2006 at the Holiday Inn, Rockside Rd, in Independence, Ohio. Timelines are as follows: March 31 – deadline for submission of “Consent to Serve” forms; April 30 - deadline for returning ballots; and May 21- Counting of ballots. Best of luck to the candidates to be elected and to the next PNAO President Bessie Schiroky! I would like to take this opportunity to convey my most heartfelt gratitude to all the Executive Directors, Committee Chairs and members, Facility Coordinators, Committed Members, and to each and everyone who in one way or another continue to support the Philippine Nurses Association of Ohio. MABUHAY and GOD BLESS US ALL! |
